I have tried unsuccessfully for 3 days now to run the auto installer for profile manager. I have read and re-read the "Under cgi-bin Installation" and have tried to install pm3 that way. I followed these instructions to the letter,

1. Create a directory under your web site cgi-bin. Let's call it "members".
It should be possible to access to this directory by going to
www.yourdomain.com/cgi-bin/members/
2. Upload all files under cgi folder in this zip to the members directory.
3. Set these permissions:
- /cgi-bin/member/data and directories inside to chmod 766
- All .cgi files under /cgi-bin/members/ directory to chmod 755
4. Open your browser and go to www.yourdomain.com/cgi-bin/members/setup.cgi

I get to step 4 and after the cgi runs its checks and all pass, I click on next and get get "authentification failed" on the page and I am requested to log in again. I cannot get any further.

Make sure that your data folder is writable. That could be problem. You must make sure data folder and everything inside is writable. You must make sure the data folder is chmod 777 and everything under it chmod 777 as well.
